  • Outdoor Youth Book Camp! 9 a.m.- noon in two, 1-week sessions: Aug 3-7 and August 10-14 in Grand Marais at Minnesota Children's Press lawn screen tent, near the library.

Our goal: To mentor kids in writing, illustrating and publishing at least 2 class-authored  -illustrated books. We will publish print samples after Book Camp ends in August, and provide digital PDFs.

Who can enroll? Each week is limited to 6 children, with the youngest just completing grade 1 and oldest having just completed grade 9. Or so. We are flexible about age for motivated writers and illustrators.

What do we do? Outside , we research WALKING DISCOVERY STORIES to observe and interview elders about the history of Grand Marais for half the morning. In the screen tents, we write and draw for the last half of the morning, working on multiple stories, comics, graphic novels and more!

Where? In Grand Marais, in screen tents that are the coronavirus-safe outdoor publishing labs of Minnesota Children's Press at its headquarters on West 1st Street, near the Grand Marais Library.

What coronavirus-safe practices are in place? All will wear masks; maintain safe social distances of 6 feet or more; bring own pencils or be assigned materials Day 1 that you do not share; use the individual keyboard each child will be provided. There is no sharing of materials. Hand washing, wipes and sanitizer will be frequently used. Ill students will be sent home. No snacks or meals provided.

Tuition: FREE, thanks to a generous grant from the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation!

Questions? Please call, email, or write us a paper letter. We have hardly any social media; it's bad for your imagination and sense of self.

The occasional  Instagram is as far as we go. Even that is iffy. Check out the compelling 2021 FaceBook (now called Meta) Whistleblower Frances Haugen testimony before Congress about FB's  "moral bankruptcy"
https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2021/oct/05/frances-haugen-whistleblower-moral-bankruptcy-facebook. Read or listen to the early revelations in the Wall Street Journal's investigative series, Facebook Files here https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-facebook-files-11631713039

Drop social media. Go outside.

Or, join our Comma Club and learn how to make writing implements and use semicolons and be a good person communicating  kindly and effectively through paper  letters.

NEW in 2023-2025!
Our outdoor Letteracy Deck has been generously funded by the Grand Marais Lions Club, 1st and 2nd Thrift Store,  the Iron Range Resources & Rehabilitation Board, extending the success begun in 2023 by the Blandin Foundation of Grand Rapids, Minnesota!

You've mailed more than 7,000 cards and letters-for free, whee!--from Grand Marais!
